Lecturer; Anne Haworth: Art Historian and ceramics specialist

The Florentine sculptor Pietro Torrigiano and portrait painters such as Hans Holbein, Marcus Gheeraerts the Younger and Sir Anthony van Dyck were pre-eminent among a succession of European artists who worked under royal and noble patronage during the Tudor and Stuart dynasties. Their art expressed the magnificence and sophistication of the English Court during a turbulent age of Reformation, Civil War and the Restoration. Artisans from Europe included skilled Flemish weavers, Huguenot silversmiths, French upholsterers and weavers of silks and tapestries.

These fascinating lectures will cover the rise of British naval supremacy, laying the foundation of the global Empire, great sea battles and exploring life at sea in this 'wooden world'. Peter will also look at paintings by maritime artists of the day, illustrations and caricatures used to capture the essence of the period and finally the Trafalgar Campaign and the melancholy splendour of Lord Nelson's heraldic funeral. This promises to be an exceptional day not to be missed.

This fascinating day of lectures will take us through the concept of interior design from Roman frescos and the art of  Renaissance Italy to the design fashions reflected in the eighteenth century picture collecting and the art of picture hanging and display for interior design in modern times.

Lecture 1. From Walls to Canvas
From origins in Roman fresco, Renaissance Italy developed rich architectural schemes that influenced the courts of Europe. The introduction of canvas paintings into these designs shaped the history of picture hanging.

Lecture 2. Collecting, hanging and Good Taste
Large scale collecting in the eighteenth century produced private and, eventually, public picture galleries. These new interiors reflected design fashion, new demands on the artist and a new kind of connoisseurship.

Lecture 3. Modern picture hanging and interior design
What we now call picture hanging evolved over time. This talk traces picture hanging in smaller homes across two hundred years, with new informal arrangements and practical tips for today.
